Dismissing Western institutions through the label of a “criminal elite”

What it claims

Accusations that Biden threatened Poroshenko are presented as proof that a US politician is criminal. Remarks by Bill Gates and Anthony Fauci on vaccination and the pandemic are inflated into accusations of crimes against humanity. Historical and contemporary Vatican scandals are portrayed as proof that the institution is a centre of systemic corruption.

Goal

To deepen cynicism and distrust among politically disaffected people in Germany by encouraging them to treat dramatic, unrelated accusations as a general description of Western institutions.

Techniques used

• Exaggeration or MinimisationRemarks about vaccination and the pandemic are turned into grounds for demanding arrests for crimes against humanity.
• Loaded LanguageThe Vatican is labelled the “dark heart of power” and portrayed as a hub of corruption, sex and secret plots.

The real grievance it exploits

The narrative exploits understandable fatigue with political scandals, concerns about public-health decisions, and distrust of powerful state, corporate and religious institutions.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: A “leaked” label or a selection of quotations does not replace checking a recording’s provenance, full context and independent corroboration. A historical scandal also does not prove a general claim about an entire institution today.
• Reframe: Serious accusations against influential people and institutions require each assertion to be examined separately. Emotional calls for arrests or insulting labels are not that examination.
