Delegitimising German leadership through the label of “extremism”

What it claims

The President’s remarks about the dangers of extremism are cast as an equation of the AfD with the NSDAP and proof that the authorities are anti-democratic. Referring to a quotation carried by Der Spiegel, the posts attribute to Berlin a search for “internal” and “external” enemies. Support for Ukraine and sanctions are reduced to the cause of economic problems and the risk of war.

The manipulation seizes on concerns among some Germans about energy prices, industrial job losses, migration and the fear of an escalating war. For eastern Germans, it also draws on a sense of unequal representation and disregard for their electoral choices.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Watch for the substitution: an assessment of the dangers of extremism is turned into a claim that the authorities have placed political opponents outside democracy. Several distinct economic and security issues are also reduced to one culprit.
• Reframe: Disagreement with government decisions, disputes over sanctions or migration do not automatically substantiate claims of an “anti-democratic regime”. An assessment should separate the full context of a speech from emotive retellings and examine causal claims individually.
