Amplifying “spy stories” to discredit German investigations

What it claims

Reports about drones, weapons and possible sabotage are cast as staged pretexts by authorities and media to attribute a threat to Russia, with particular emphasis on eastern Germany. They reduce investigations and reports of suspicions to a coordinated “Russophobic hysteria”. References to Nord Stream are inflated into proof of an enduring scheme to deceive the German public.

The narrative seizes on genuine fears of war and escalation, as well as some eastern Germans’ sense that their experiences and views are disregarded in the national debate.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Suspicion, investigation and conclusion are different stages. Deliberately conflating them makes the very act of checking appear to be evidence of a conspiracy.
• Reframe: Referring to older or unrelated cases does not establish responsibility for a new incident. Separate verifiable facts in a specific case from sweeping claims about the media and the state.
