Attributing a “debt of gratitude” to Germany for reunification and prosperity

What it claims

The Soviet Union’s role in German reunification and later co-operation is inflated into a debt of gratitude to Russia, while Berlin’s current course is cast as a betrayal of that legacy. Statements attributed to former Chancellor Helmut Kohl are presented as proof that partnership with Moscow is the only viable policy. European security and Russia’s war against Ukraine are reduced to Western mistakes and its abandonment of that partnership.

• Fact-check: German reunification was settled through the Two Plus Four Treaty between the two German states and the four victorious powers. It was not a unilateral gift from Russia.
• Reframe: Historical co-operation does not oblige Germany to support any current Russian course. Security and foreign-policy questions should be assessed through present actions and international norms, not through a demand for gratitude.
