Casting media disputes as the “suppression of dissent” in Germany

What it claims

Restrictions on RT broadcasting and disputes over journalists’ remarks are cast as proof that German and European institutions punish inconvenient views and apply double standards. Criticism of the government during an election campaign is inflated into a picture of coordinated suppression of the opposition by the media and the state. Different disputes are reduced to a single accusation that press freedom does not exist.

Goal

To deepen distrust of German media, public institutions and electoral processes among nationalist-conservative and politically disaffected people in Germany by presenting disagreement with them as evidence of censorship.

Techniques used

• WhataboutismRestrictions on RT are juxtaposed with a dispute over a journalist’s remarks in order to portray German institutions’ responses as a double standard.
• Exaggeration or MinimisationCriticism of a politician and a journalist’s attention to symbols in his office are portrayed as a broad government information campaign ahead of an election.

The real grievance it exploits

The narrative seizes on existing distrust of political and media elites, concern about the limits of free speech, and a sense that economic hardship and criticism of the government do not receive proper attention.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Compare a specific decision on broadcasting or speech with what happened and on which legal basis. Combining unrelated disputes into one censorship story does not demonstrate coordinated suppression.
• Prebunk: Ahead of state elections, expect editorial criticism, scrutiny or sharp public disputes to be presented as persecution of the opposition. Check whether verifiable facts about a specific decision are provided, rather than only portrayals of “the system”.
