Framing BRICS against the West as a “fairer” world order

What it claims

Figures cited in speeches about BRICS’s share of the global economy, alongside assertions about the effects of sanctions, are inflated into evidence of declining Western influence. BRICS is simultaneously portrayed as a ready-made “fairer” alternative centred on growth hubs in the Global South and East. The summit declaration is presented as support for multilateralism and multipolarity, without equating it with the speeches’ claims of the group’s leading role.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Pairing selected economic indicators with a political conclusion about Western “decline” does not establish that conclusion. Check the figures, the comparison period and whether they support the forecast being made.
• Reframe: Calls to reform international institutions and cooperate between states do not mean that one bloc automatically replaces another. Multilateralism requires scrutiny of every participant’s interests and actions, rather than treating states’ self-descriptions as evidence.
