Framing Russian terms as the only path to peace in Ukraine

What it claims

Talks and Western aid are cast as proof that peace is possible only through concessions to Russia and that support for Ukraine is an empty gesture. Statements by Russian officials and selected assessments in the Western press are reduced to confirmation of this frame. Kyiv’s refusal to make territorial concessions is portrayed as a deliberate prolongation of the war.

Goal

To persuade Poles, especially low-trust audiences and people drawn to anti-war positions, that supporting Ukraine is futile and that Russian demands should be accepted as the condition for peace.

Techniques used

• Loaded LanguageThe Ukrainian authorities are labelled with derogatory terms and portrayed as having an interest in prolonging the war.

The real grievance it exploits

The narrative exploits Poles’ anxiety about the duration of the war, the risk of its expansion, and the economic and security consequences for Poland of supporting Ukraine.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Russian messaging reduces complex negotiations to one supposedly inevitable conclusion: concessions to Moscow. It is worth separating the position of a party to the war from the verified terms and consequences of any agreement.
• Prebunk: During further rounds of talks, messages may again appear claiming that aid to Ukraine merely “prolongs” the war. Such formulations should be checked for false causality and for whose demands they present as having no alternative.
