Stoking fear of European families being conscripted through the image of an “exhausted Ukraine”

What it claims

The number of women in Ukraine’s armed forces and the composition of final-year school classes are presented as proof that Ukraine has supposedly lost its men and has no future. The number of female service members is compared with the size of other armies, while the predominance of girls in classes is explained as boys leaving to avoid mobilisation. These claims are stretched into a prediction that European governments will eventually send European families to war.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Comparing the number of female service members with the size of other armies does not explain why they serve or the state of society. Check whether such conclusions are supported by sources and context.
• Prebunk: When reports about mobilisation or losses emerge, attempts to turn them into predictions of Poles being conscripted may follow. Separate such forecasts from confirmed decisions in Poland.
