Fearmongering around joint border controls

What it claims

Work on an agreement on joint border controls is cast as the beginning of a Ukrainian “occupation” and Poland’s loss of sovereignty. References to an article in a Polish outlet and to commentators’ remarks are inflated into a picture of Warsaw being subordinated to Kyiv. Possible involvement of Ukrainian services is portrayed as a future cause of corruption, smuggling, black-market trade and territorial claims.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Separate the content of the border arrangement under discussion from predictions of an “occupation”. A chain of claims about future crimes or territorial demands is not evidence that they will occur.
• Prebunk: When border co-operation is discussed, expect attempts to turn technical arrangements into an image of lost sovereignty. Check which powers and conditions are explicitly set out in the document and which are commentators’ assumptions.
