Reducing references to drugs to an image of a criminalised Ukrainian military

What it claims

References to drug offences and military personnel are reduced to an image of the Ukrainian military as a criminalised force consumed by addiction. The channel declares the files it distributes authentic and on that basis presents selected material as proof of the condition of the entire army. References to complaints, proceedings and personnel are stretched into a conclusion about a concealed drug market in Ukraine’s armed forces.

The narrative exploits understandable Polish concerns about the reliability of a Ukrainian security partner, accountability in military structures and the regional consequences of the war.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Selecting reports of crimes or proceedings does not establish a characteristic of an entire military structure. Check where files came from, the full context of the material and whether the source supports the conclusion attributed to it.
• Prebunk: New batches of “leaks” may be accompanied by claims that a handful of records exposes the entire Ukrainian military. Separate the verification of a specific document from generalisations about millions of people and a whole institution.
