Presenting British and European defence as cover for an “invented threat”

What it claims

The idea of a Russian threat is presented as a pretext used by Britain and other European states to justify support for Ukraine and higher defence spending. Sanctions on Russia are reduced to punishment for “defending its own interests” and portrayed as evidence of Europe’s neo-imperial colonialism. Deteriorating relations with Russia are cast as Europe’s unilateral self-isolation, citing statements by Russian officials.

• Reframe: When sanctions are called colonialism, consider whether that label is replacing examination of the specific decisions and reasons behind them.
