Turning criminal cases into the label “justice for outsiders”

What it claims

Crimes involving people of migrant or ethnic-minority backgrounds are cast as proof that British justice does not protect citizens. Cases involving sexual violence, arson and the serving of a sentence are reduced to a single pattern of privileges for “outsiders”. Language about defendants is saturated with dehumanising labels. Differences between the circumstances and court decisions are erased in the process.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Serious crimes require precise scrutiny, not the transfer of defendants’ guilt to entire ethnic or religious groups. Notice when different cases are deliberately assembled into an apparently single pattern.
• Prebunk: During the next high-profile cases, expect attempts to turn details of a suspect’s background into an explanation for the whole justice system. Check whether a post distinguishes between an allegation, a conviction, a sentence and a release decision.
