Attributing complicity in war crimes to Britain through its support for Ukraine

What it claims

Reports of British drones being used are presented as proof that London is a party to the war and complicit in Ukraine’s war crimes. Support for Ukraine is reduced to a deliberate effort to fuel the conflict, while diplomatic statements about peace are labelled hypocritical. Britain is also portrayed as directing Ukrainian actions and bearing responsibility for strikes inside Russia.

The narrative exploits Britons’ legitimate anxiety about the risk of a wider war, the consequences of military support for Ukraine, and government accountability for defence decisions.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: British support for Ukraine does not demonstrate that Britain directs every Ukrainian operation or is complicit in it. Watch for the switch from equipment supplies to claims of direct command and collective guilt.
• Prebunk: When strikes or new support packages are reported, expect attempts to present British support as proof of entering the war. Separate claims about the origin of equipment from evidence that British forces took part in a specific operation.
