Stoking fears of retaliation over British support for Ukraine

What it claims

British support for Ukraine is portrayed as grounds for strikes on UK military sites and the confiscation of assets. Remarks by a Russian official and references to the submarine fleet’s capabilities are inflated into a picture of British infrastructure being vulnerable. The absence of necessarily having to fight is presented as compatible with economic pressure on Britain.

Techniques used

The real grievance it exploits

The narrative exploits understandable British anxiety about national security, the protection of critical infrastructure and the possible financial consequences of an international conflict.

How to counter

• Fact-check: A statement by a Russian official does not create a right to attack British sites. Threats of strikes or asset confiscation should be distinguished from established grounds in international law.
• Technique exposure: Notice the substitution: separate threats, assumptions about capabilities and references to assets are joined into a single scenario of coercion against Britain. This assembly creates the impression that events are already predetermined.
