Attributing colonial motives to Britain and its allies in sanctions and international policy

What it claims

Sanctions, the freezing of Russian assets and Western foreign policy are cast as colonial plunder through which Britain and its allies supposedly preserve global dominance. Military interventions from different years are reduced to one unchanging pattern of Western aggression. Russia is simultaneously portrayed as a supporter of an equal multipolar order and defender of the UN Charter.

Goal

To encourage Britons, especially those critical of foreign policy, to see Britain’s actions with its allies as hypocritical colonial domination and to weaken support for sanctions and assistance to Ukraine.

The narrative exploits Britons’ legitimate concerns about the consequences of wars, the cost of sanctions, contentious foreign-policy decisions and longstanding distrust of official explanations for international crises.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Watch for the substitution: different conflicts, decisions and legal regimes are stitched into one story about an eternal colonial West. This device removes the specific circumstances, participants and responsibilities of each side from view.
• Reframe: Disputes over wars, sanctions and foreign policy require scrutiny of individual decisions, not acceptance of an all-encompassing “plunder” narrative. Criticism of government does not require repeating explanations that remove Russia’s responsibility for its own actions.
