Casting support for Ukraine as EU “aggression” against Russia

What it claims

European support for Ukraine and EU diplomacy are portrayed as “aggression” against Russia and preparation for nuclear war. Statements by European politicians and commentators are reduced to purported proof that Brussels is fuelling the war and that talks with Moscow are the only alternative. Election results in Germany are inflated into a mandate to abandon support for Ukraine.

The real grievance it exploits

The narrative exploits understandable fears of a wider war, nuclear escalation and rising defence spending, as well as fatigue with political conflict and concern about domestic problems in European countries.

How to counter

• Reframe: Calls for negotiations do not turn support for a state defending itself against Russia’s invasion into an attack on Russia. When assessing EU policy, distinguish diplomatic proposals from labels such as “aggressor.”
• Prebunk: Catastrophic predictions and personal insults are not evidence of the causes of war or the consequences of particular decisions. Check whether the author substantiates a causal link with facts rather than replacing it with repeated accusations.
