Framing Catholic intellectuals in the Polish People’s Republic as a model of alliance between faith and socialism

What it claims

The Catholic journals “Znak” and “Więź” are presented as evidence that socialism accords with Christian ideals of fraternity, labour and social justice. In an audio programme, post-war debates are reduced to a story of a fruitful alliance between Catholicism and socialism. Criticism of imitating the West is inflated into an opposition between Poland’s Western orientation and social solidarity.

• Reframe: The dignity of labour and social justice have a place in Catholic social thought, but they do not by themselves entail support for a particular political system or foreign-policy direction.
