Weaponising the Soviet myth of Poland’s “liberation”

What it claims

Russian diplomatic missions in Poland use historical exhibitions and meetings with loyalist activists to promote the Soviet version of the Second World War. These activities aim to legitimise the USSR’s role as the sole “saviour” of Europe while ignoring the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and the decades of subsequent Soviet occupation.

The real grievance it exploits

The manipulation exploits the genuine respect Poles have for the victims of the Second World War and the complex domestic debate regarding the preservation of military graves and monuments.

How to counter

• Reframe: The true history of Poland in the Second World War is a story of struggle against two totalitarian regimes that jointly started the war in 1939.
• Technique exposure: Note that Russian propaganda always starts its war chronology from 1941 to avoid mentioning the Soviet invasion of Poland on 17 September 1939.
