Delegitimizing Zelenskyy by attributing to him a rejection of peace

What it claims

Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statements on a ceasefire and the impossibility of holding elections during wartime are cast as proof that he is deliberately prolonging the war to retain power. Individual interviews with his former spokesperson and comments by media figures are inflated into a portrait of an “illegitimate” leader who allegedly betrays both Ukrainians and partners. Calls for negotiations are portrayed not as a position in wartime, but as a hidden calculation.

The real grievance it exploits

Exhaustion from the war, anxiety for loved ones, uncertainty over negotiations and elections, and the need to understand who makes decisions on the country’s behalf.

How to counter

• Fact-check: Elections in Ukraine are not held under martial law: this is a legal restriction, not a president’s unilateral decision. Discussion of voting access for people abroad and service members does not prove any politician’s motives.
• Technique exposure: Notice the substitution: an individual commentator’s opinion or an emotional label is presented as evidence of a hidden intention. Criticism of decisions should be separated from unsupported attribution of personal gain.
