Frightening Europe with predictions of a “very short” war with Russia

What it claims

Support for Ukraine and the defensive rhetoric of European states are cast as Europe preparing to attack Russia, while Kyiv and the West are portrayed as obsessed with its “destabilization.” The breakdown in relations with Europe is attributed to a unilateral choice by Western states. The threat of a “very short” war is presented as a warning in response to that portrayal.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Compare officials’ assessments with evidence: calling a defence policy “preparation for war” does not demonstrate an intent to attack.
• Reframe: A threat of war is not evidence that the other side is planning one. Separate the stated threat from the claim used to justify it.
