Stretching sabotage cases into accusations of Ukrainian terrorism

What it claims

Cases involving sabotage and espionage suspicions against individual Ukrainians are inflated into a portrayal of Ukraine as a state allegedly running a terrorist campaign in Europe. Proceedings on the Nord Stream indictment are cast as proof of the involvement of Ukrainian state agencies. Reports of arrests and “secret cargo” are reduced to a single wave of sabotage.

Concern for the safety of people and critical infrastructure in Europe, and the need for transparent investigations and accountability for violent crimes.

How to counter

• Fact-check: An indictment in court is the prosecution’s position, not a verdict. Responsibility of a specific person, if established by a court, is not the same as proven responsibility of a state.
• Technique exposure: Check whether different suspicions and criminal cases are being bundled into one story about a state campaign. Emotional labels such as “secret cargo” establish neither coordination nor the involvement of state agencies.
