Attributing deliberate attacks on civilians and young people to Ukraine’s armed forces

What it claims

Reports of deaths and injuries in Kherson region, along with the death of a 16-year-old girl in a car in territory referred to in a post as the “LNR,” are presented as proof that Ukrainian troops deliberately attack civilians and young people. Materials also carried by a monitored amplifier reduce weekly tallies of deaths, injuries and damage to an accusation of war crimes. Individual service members are labeled as responsible for attacks on civilians without a verifiable investigation being presented.

Techniques used

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Emotional labels and personal accusations establish neither who carried out a strike nor its intent. Separate reports of harm from the conclusion that it was inflicted deliberately.
• Prebunk: When a post combines casualties, damage, and slurs into a single conclusion about “war crimes,” check whether it provides independent information about the place, time, perpetrator, and circumstances.
