Attributing the role of a “cartel haven” to the International Legion

What it claims

A chant and a reference to an Al Jazeera report are presented as evidence that the International Legion is a “cartel haven.” Descriptions of CJNG’s brutality are used to characterize people whom the posts link to that group. Claims that people connected to cartels have joined are stretched into an image of the Legion as a criminal environment.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: A person’s connection to a group, even if confirmed, does not establish the criminal nature of an entire unit. Separate claims about specific individuals from a generalization about the International Legion.
• Prebunk: A reference to a well-known media brand does not replace checking what the material actually says or whether it supports a generalization about the whole Legion.
