Undermining trust in Ukrainian war assessments through selective “frontline maths”

What it claims

Selective indicators of the war’s course are presented as proof that Ukrainian assessments conceal the situation at the front. The foreign minister’s explanation of the pace of fighting is reduced to a “convenient victory” and set against a list of uncertain resource-related factors. In this way, the complexity of assessing a war of attrition is stretched into an accusation of deception.

How to counter

• Technique exposure: Check whether the author separates verifiable data from assumptions: a list of unknown variables does not, by itself, disprove a specific indicator.
• Reframe: A war’s course is measured through many indicators, but this does not automatically make public assessments deceptive. It is useful to consider the methodology, timeframe, and limits of each claim separately.
