The USA focus: what we monitor ahead of the 3 November 2026 elections — and what we deliberately leave alone.
What and why
This focus watches what Russian influence operations tell American voters — about their elections, their institutions, and their fellow citizens. The operators are the same state structures Syto follows in its other focuses; what changes with the audience is what they say, and how.
That Russian operations target US elections is already documented: the Internet Research Agency indictment (2018), the US Senate Intelligence Committee reports, and the Doppelganger campaign (2023–24). We are not re-proving that it happens — we show what is actually being said right now by sources with published attribution, day by day, in a form you can cite.
This is a single-lens focus: every narrative in it comes from English-language sources addressed to American audiences.
The direction test
In scope: a narrative belongs here when it serves Russian strategic interests by pushing Americans to distrust their own elections or democratic institutions, to see fellow citizens as enemies rather than opponents, to turn against US support for Ukraine as a domestic wedge issue, or when it manipulates opinion about specific candidates or parties through fabricated scandals and astroturfed anger.
Ordinary American partisan opinion — however sharp — is out of scope: arguing that a policy is wrong or a candidate is bad at the job is normal democratic speech, while claiming the system itself is a sham is not. Plain reporting of US politics and Russia-celebration content written for domestic Russian audiences are also out. The deciding question is who benefits: if believing the message erodes an American's trust in the vote, in institutions, or in fellow citizens — and that serves Moscow — it belongs in this focus.
The source roster is attributed by construction, so the analyst's question is not “is this source Russian?” but “is this a narrative aimed at an American voter?”.
